On the Opposite side of Jericho, at the junction of Wadi Al Kharrar and the Jordan River, some very old churches were recently discovered commemorating the place of the baptism of Christ. The archaeologists also revealed, to approximately 1 km upstream, the vestiges of a whole religious complex including churches, cisterns and baptismal font built by the first Christian pilgrims at the supposed site of the “Bethany beyond Jordan” where St John the Baptist preached.
