At 30km from Petra, you can fork on the left to see, sitting at the top of a hill, the castle of Shaubak, dominating a small valley which drops towards the valley of Wadi Araba. This strategic position of first order was strengthened by Baldwin 1st in 1115 A.D., to control the road between Syria and Egypt or Hejaz. One visit of this castle will give you a good idea about the grandeur and the determination of the Crusaders.
